WhatsApp messages are stored in your phone memory and not on the centralized servers. These messages are backed up regularly and you can retrieve a copy by following some simple steps. But remember the messages that were deleted after the backup will not be restored. WhatsApp takes the backup everyday at 4 AM automatically and the conversations happened till that time can be restored easily. This backup is saved at the folder /sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases. You can get back your WhatsApp chat messages by following the below method. The method is simple to follow.
Step 1: Go to Settings -> Applications -> WhatsApp. Tap on the app and select the option “Clear Data”. Click on OK, when the warning message pop up. This will delete all the current settings and messages saved by the application. Don’t worry, we will be restoring the backup soon.
Step 2: Go back and open the WhatsApp application. You can will be able to see the configuration screen of WhatsApp. Follow the steps. Once you added the number, you will get a ‘Backup found’ message.
Step 3: Tap on ‘restore’ and the restoration process will start. Wait for sometime and you will get the completion message, tap on Continue.
Step 4: Congratulations! Your deleted messages are back now.
How to Retrieve Deleted Images and Videos
Interestingly when you remove an image or video from your WhatsApp screen, it’s not deleted from the device instead it just hide the view from the chat screen. You can easily access these files through a File manager. To do that go to your File Manager -> Open WhatsApp folder -> Media. You can see the Images, Video and Audio folders there. Open the folder depending the file you are looking for. You can also access these files by connecting your device to your Computer through a USB cable.
